What Is Facial Fat Transfer?

Facial fat transfer is a fat grafting procedure that allows patients to replace the facial volume over time. Fat is removed from one area of the body, most commonly the abdomen or flanks. This is done by creating a small incision and the insertion of a cannula, a tube-shaped surgical tool. Once the fat has been removed, it is purified to remove any unwanted particles attached to the fat. After a purification process, it can be injected into areas of the face to help give you a more youthful appearance.

Fat Cell Survival

When the fat cells are injected into the face, not all of them will survive. This is a normal and an expected part of the procedure. On average, 25-30% of fat cells will not survive. Because of this, surgeons will typically overcorrect and inject more than needed into the area. As you move through your recovery, your results will begin to take their permanent shape.

Recovery After Facial Fat Transfer

After the facial fat transfer procedure, you will experience some swelling, bruising, and pain. The swelling may increase for the first few days after your procedure but will decrease over time. Swelling can also be relieved with the use of cold compresses. Patients will need to spend a few days to a week at home recovering before resuming their everyday activities. Exercise, or more strenuous activities, will have to wait a bit longer. Before your procedure, you will work with Dr. Davis to select a donor area to harvest the fat from. Some areas that are commonly chosen are the thighs, abdomen, or flanks. The donor area should have an excess of fatty tissue available before the procedure.
